Let Kids Be Kids: How to Prepare for a Relaxed Family Photo Session in Margaret River
Let kids be kids! How to prepare for a relaxed family photo session in Margaret River by Stills by Jordan
"What if my child won't cooperate?”
"What if they have a meltdown?"
“What if my toddler misses their nap?”
Booking a family photoshoot with young children can feel exciting and a little daunting all at once.
Being a mother myself, I can relate to the concerns you may have about booking a family photoshoot with a young family, but as a Margaret River family photographer I can assure you that the most beautiful family photos rarely come from perfectly behaved children or perfectly posed moments.
As a relaxed family photographer in Margaret River, my approach is always centred around ease, connection, and allowing your family to simply be yourselves rather than perform for the camera.
How to prepare for a fun, relaxed family photoshoot with young kids
1. Set the tone
Children are incredibly perceptive. When parents feel calm and present, children often follow suit.
Young children often respond best when the experience feels like a fun family adventure rather than something they need to "behave" for.
While it can be tempting to promise rewards for smiling, this sometimes creates pressure and can backfire.
Instead talk about some fun things that you might do or something special you might see or find.
2. Bring Snacks!
Bringing a few non-messy snacks can also be a lifesaver, especially for toddlers and preschoolers.
3. Choose Comfortable Clothing
For the best family photos, comfort matters just as much as style.
Children who feel comfortable are more likely to run, play, cuddle, and engage naturally.
What to Expect During Your Family Photography Session
From my many photoshoots with young families and background in primary teaching, these are my top tips and what to expect at a family photoshoot in Margaret River with me.
Allow for play
Young children are not designed to stand in one place for an hour.
Expect plenty of walking, exploring, chasing, climbing, and playing.
Movement creates authentic moments and genuine expressions.
We Will Follow Your Child's Lead
Every child has a different personality.
Some children take a little time to warm up. Others jump straight into the adventure.
Rather than forcing interactions, I work with your child's natural temperament to create an experience that feels comfortable and enjoyable.
Let them be themselves
There may be imperfect moments.
A toddler may refuse a cuddle and need a moment to recalibrate. We can work around this.
Clothes may get wet (hopefully towards the end of the session!). Lean into the play and fun!
A child might decide running in the opposite direction is the most exciting thing ever. We can turn this into a running race opportunity!
These moments are all part of family life and often become some of the most cherished photographs in your gallery.
Trust the process
You don't need to look at the camera.
It is a common misconception that a family photoshoot involves smiling and posing for the camera.
While I do like to start the session with a group cuddly photo while everyone is looking and feeling fresh!
Many of the images parents love most are the ones where they're focused entirely on each other.
This is the intention behind every session as a relaxed family photographer in Margaret River - to create space for genuine connection, rather than perfect posing.
