Bilya: Where the river meets ocean, and new life begins | Margaret River Maternity photography by Stills by Jordan
There is something deeply meaningful about photographing families and mothers-to-be at the Margaret River Mouth.
Known for its rugged coastline, sweeping dunes, and breathtaking sunsets, the Margaret River Mouth is one of the most iconic locations in Margaret River. But beyond its natural beauty lies a story that makes this place even more special. The meeting of river and ocean has long been a place of significance.
In the Noongar language, the word Bilya means both river and umbilical cord.
When I first learned this, I thought how beautiful that these two words share a powerful connection. A river nourishes the land, carrying life wherever it flows. An umbilical cord nourishes a growing baby, sustaining life before birth. Both represent connection, growth, and the journey from one season into another.
For soon to be mothers and expecting families, there could hardly be a more fitting place to capture this chapter of life.
Planning Your Margaret River Maternity or Family Photoshoot
The Margaret River Mouth is particularly beautiful during the final hour before sunset when soft golden light settles across the dunes and beach.
For maternity sessions, I generally recommend booking between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, when your bump is beautifully visible while you are still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.
Whether you are celebrating a growing bump, or welcoming a new baby into the family, the Margaret River Mouth offers a setting that is both beautiful, meaningful and filled with a sense of connection and calm that allows you to simply be present together.
